Backgrounder
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) continues to be a public health issue affecting many people globally. While innovation in treatment and healthcare access has resulted in measurable progress in the treatment, prevention, and care in the last three decades, access to HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and improvement for people living with the virus in ACB communities have become obstacles in the wheel of progress.
Call for Strategic Intervention
Strategic interventions, such as the peer equity navigation program, were necessary to accelerate peer-driven health education and bridge the health equity gaps in disadvantaged communities. The Critical Health and Racial Literacy (CHRL) training, a five-week program, is a potential game-changer in the right direction to redirect the trajectory of ACB people bearing the brunt of the disease. It is designed for those serving ACB clients in a healthcare environment and recognizes the profound impact of racism on the lived experiences of community members.
The program’s relevance and importance necessitated CADHO’s partnership with the CO-CO-CO-CREATH lab to welcome the first cohort of PENs for the ACB community Vaccine Acceptance (AVA) project in the Ottawa National Capital in 2022.
